Ideas Hackathon

“How can technology promote the Island to visiting cruise liner passengers?”

Saturday 18th March – Digital Greenhouse

On Saturday March 18th we are welcoming teams and individuals to the Digital Greenhouse to take part in a one day Ideas Hackathon. The event will be held in partnership with VisitGuernsey and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Services (HPES). The workshop poses the challenge; “How can technology promote the Island to visiting cruise liner passengers?”

What is an Ideas Hackathon?

This day-long event sees teams participate to explore a defined challenge. Rather than a traditional hackathon, in which teams develop code/solutions, this workshop uses HPES tools and business modeling to take you through the stages of idea creation, collaboration and generation of mock-ups of your digital concepts.  Therefore, this workshop is a valuable exercise for those interested in how we solve big problems, how technology can drive change and those who wish to learn ways to take an idea from a concept to business model.

Who can participate and what skills do I need?

Anyone over the age of 16yrs can participant in the event, from students to experienced professionals/ entrepreneurs.  Specialist knowledge in IT/ Software is not required. If you are creative, have great ideas and looking to learn how these can be formed into a business concept, then this Ideas Hackathon is for you.

What is the challenge?

In 2016 Guernsey welcomed over 130,000 visitors from cruise liners. This challenge is to take innovative thinking and digital technology to find solutions that promote Guernsey to these visitors, for the benefit of our Island’s economy.  You will be asked to consider the benefits for both visitors and local businesses/suppliers/stakeholders in your solution, as well as propose a business model that can support the project.

To set the scene for the challenge, a detailed brief providing useful intelligence, audience information and potential opportunities will be presented to you on the day. The event will be hosted by specialist advisors from HPES who will guide you through their processes using HPE’s Open Innovation Platform tools and methods.

Are there prizes?

As well as a day spent working with one of the world’s largest technology companies, there will be prizes of Digital Greenhouse memberships for the winning team.

How do we create mock-ups and business models on the day?

Your team will be taken through how to use the HPES tools to mock-up your solution.  Providing a visual representation to allow quick and effective showcasing of its features and value to the user. The business model canvas is a template that enables your team to define the value of your idea, generate potential revenue and deliver the concept to market. The judges on the day will be looking for great concepts and features, as well as practical feasibility of the business model. We will provide training before the event on the tools that will be used to generate the mock-ups and business model, if required.
