For those new to HR or perhaps taking on some HR responsibility, understanding how the Human Resources function is supposed to work can be tricky when there are laws, good practice, and above all – people – to consider all at the same time.

These ACAS workshops will give you the building blocks of knowledge to improve your skills and confidence in dealing with all kinds of HR matters.

Held at Les Cotils, there are 2 different workshops on 27 February 2018 (am & pm). Each workshop is £75 (£60 for CIPD Members) or book both for £100 (£85 for CIPD Members). Lunch is provided for those who book both workshops.

Workshop 1 – Registration at 8.45am for a 9.00am start – 12.00 noon finish

  • Recruitment – drafting job descriptions, interviews and selection;
  • Contracts of Employment – terms & conditions, pay & benefits, changing terms & conditions;
  • Ending the Employment Relationship – un/fair dismissals, ending contracts;
  • Highlights of other considerations including Data Protection and Employment Tribunals.

Workshop 2 – Registration at 12.45pm for a 1.00pm start – 4pm finish

  • Equal Opportunities – Types of discrimination;
  • Managing Discipline & Grievance – informal and formal action, holding disciplinary meetings and dealing with employee grievances;
  • Managing Absence – dealing with unauthorised absence, short/long term illness
  • Highlights of other considerations including dealing with challenging situations and behavioural

The workshops will be presented by Paul Beard (Area Director, ACAS South East) and will be based on the law in Guernsey – noting good practice from the mainland where the law has developed further than here in Guernsey. Paul has delivered a wide diversity of training for the CIPD in Guernsey and for many other Channel Island based employers and works closely with the Guernsey Employment Relations Service. Paul trained as a lawyer, before moving into health investigations and then regulation. He has an MBA and is a CMI Chartered Manager.
