A seminar on aircraft registration in Guernsey and the Cape Town Convention

Christopher Jones, Partner, Ogier will moderate the seminar.

Professor Sir Roy Goode QC, author of many tomes and articles on international and commercial law, including the Official Commentary on the Convention on International Interests in Mobile Equipment and Protocol thereto on Matters Specific to Aircraft Equipment (‘the Cape Town Convention as applied to aircraft objects’) will give a talk on the Cape Town Convention.

Gus Paterson, Guernsey Aircraft Registrar and Director of Civil Aviation, will be explaining how the Registry works in practice.

Joost Groenenboom, Executive Director of SGI Aviation will explain operating leases in practice.

Session 1 – Aircraft registration and leases in practice

This seminar will provide a useful insight into registration of aircraft and charges in Guernsey.

Gus Paterson, Director of Civil Aviation for the Channel Islands and Guernsey Aircraft Registrar will explain the registration process for 2-reg. Joost Groenenboom, Executive Director of SGI Aviation will be discussing operational leases, touching on Cape Town and the use thereof and registrations, followed by the challenges that airlines/owners face with international transfers (and regulations) of aircraft and conclusions/best practices.

Session 2 – The Cape Town Convention

This seminar will provide practitioners with a useful oversight of the international and domestic Guernsey regime for securing charges over aircraft, which regime is created by the extension of the Cape Town Convention to Guernsey.

Guernsey is one of only three territories to which the UK extended the Convention upon ratification (along with the Cayman Islands and Gibraltar). Further, due to the speed of the legislative drafting, Guernsey is the only Crown Dependency to which the Convention has been extended, giving it a distinctive advantage in relation to charges over aircraft. As the author of the Official Commentary on the Convention, Professor Sir Roy Goode QC, is uniquely placed to provide a fascinating insight. Further, Crown Advocate Hilary Pullum will explain the Guernsey implementation of the Convention.

(This seminar is a joint initiative of the Law Officers Chambers and the DCA, kindly sponsored by Ogier and SGI Aviation.)
