Olivia Kemp, the latest international artist in residence to exhibit here as part of new charity Art for Guernsey’s local events, will display her work for two weeks from next Thursday.

The exhibition, in the Markets building, forms part of a charitable art initiative launched and supported by Guernsey resident and art collector David Ummels. His efforts have been welcomed by Guernsey Chamber. Director John O’Neill commented that creativity is likely to become even more important in island life and education as other areas of life become computerised and automated.

David devised Art for Guernsey after settling here with his family and deciding to use his relationships in the art world to invite renowned artists to exhibit here.

‘This initiative is very much about creating an opportunity for the islanders to discover high quality art for free. It is also about supporting the local community in donating all the profit generated by the exhibitions to local charities. Finally, It is about using the presence of the visiting artists to actively engage into the social life of the island: visiting schools, retirement homes and hospitals in order to bring art where it is most needed and try to make people happy.’

About the artist:
Olivia Kemp studied painting at Winchester School of Art and went on to study
MA Drawing at Wimbledon College of Art where she was awarded The Jealous Prize. She also completed a Postgraduate program at the Royal Drawing School.

Her drawings are concerned with notions of wilderness and tensions between the natural and man-made. She has exhibited at various galleries including The Saatchi Gallery, The National Gallery, Christies New York and also Hyde Park Corner Tube Station as part of “The Art Below” project. She has artworks in the collections of both the V&A Museum and the University of the Arts London, and many privately held by British and International fine art collectors. She is due to exhibit through Art for Guernsey in Market Square, St Peter Port from 28th of September until the 7th of October 2017.
