Walkers employment conference to look at handling gross misconduct

Walkers employment conference next month will look at the challenging topic of gross misconduct occurring outside work, which has the potential to impact on an employer’s reputation or working relationships.

The interactive conference will see delegates presented with a case study involving a fictional employee who fails to turn up to work after being arrested for a domestic incident. The case study will be broken down into parts with a number of unforeseen twists and turns as the scenario develops. Walkers’ employment specialists, Advocates Louise Hall and Victoria Pratt from Guernsey and Advocate Niall MacDonald from Jersey, will be joined by a senior officer from Guernsey Police to consider the issues raised by the case study.

‘The employment conference is always very popular as people particularly enjoy both the interactive and the practical approach we take. We want to ensure we bring a situation to life and that those attending go away with a deeper knowledge not only of the law, but also the right and the wrong ways of dealing with a situation,’ said Advocate Hall.

‘By looking at a case study, we can break it down and show how a situation can quickly evolve, what steps should be taken at each point, what evidence is required, who should be involved, what happens to the employee and what should be said to their colleagues and their clients. Dealing with an allegation of gross misconduct is not easy for any employer and our objective is to help businesses put procedures in place to handle the various stages.’

Advocate Hall added that Walkers was delighted that Guernsey Police had agreed to join the conference as gross misconduct can often involve a criminal aspect.
‘We want to thank Guernsey Police for agreeing to take part as they will bring a different but important perspective and can share their experiences and advice on what role they play and when they would expect to liaise with employers,’ she said.

The conference takes place in the La Seigneurie Room at St Pierre Park Hotel, from 8.30am to 1.00pm on 3 October 2017. Places, which cost £95 (or £85 for members of the Chamber of Commerce or the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development), can be booked via Eventbrite.
Attendance certificates will be available.
