"Road to recovery – building a knowledge based economy"

The Chamber of Commerce is delighted to welcome Sara Draper and John Ogier as our guest speakers at the Chamber Lunch on 17th May.

Sara Draper is the CBI’s head of the Knowledge Economy Group having taken over the role in January 2009. She oversees the CBI’s work on Intellectual Property, creative industries, ICT/digital communications and information security. The mission of the group is lobby for world class business environment for knowledge creation and exploitation.

John Ogier is the Bailiwick of Guernsey’s Registrar of Intellectual Property. His Primary role is the creation of an intellectual property environment which enables and enhances the economic opportunities on the Island. This includes legislation, international agreements, new business development as well as the registration services available through the Guernsey intellectual Property Office.

Intellectual Property is a vital part of 21st century business, whether for small local companies or international enterprises. As a strategic intangible asset it forms a significant part of the value and competitive advantage of a business. It is important that businesses of all sizes realise the value of the IP they own and can exploit.

The Confederation of British Industry has been active in promoting the IP environment and the awareness of IP for both the business community and amongst the main political parties in the UK. Creating the right environment for IP intensive industries is going to be an essential part of the UK’s future competitiveness in a global economy. Sara and John will give a presentation to stimulate thought and discussion around this topic as it relates to the Bailiwick of Guernsey.

President of the Chamber of Commerce, Julian Winser said “"IP is a growing business in Guernsey and therefore provides an opportunity.  Both its reach and speed of change is enormous.  This talk is very timely - so we are grateful for both Sara and John for giving us their time. "

The lunch will be held in the Regency Room of the OGH Hotel, oteH12.15 for 12.30pm on Monday 17th May 2010.  Bookings for individual places or tables can be made with the Chamber Office by emailing nicola.knight@guernseychamber.com.  Please click here to download a booking form.
