Chamber Lunch - Richard Babbe & Jeremy Thompson. "Tidal Power in Guernsey - How Realistic is the Possibility?"

For the June Chamber Lunch the Chamber of Commerce is delighted to welcome a two-handed presentation from Richard Babbé and Jeremy Thompson of the Guernsey Renewable Energy Commission (GREC).   Richard and Jeremy will give Chamber members an insight into the progress being made, since GREC was set up in 2009 by the Commerce & Employment Department, to promote the orderly exploitation of renewable energy resources in the territorial seas of Guernsey.  GREC, Chaired by Richard, is made up of a team of three, an academic, Professor Nick Day, a lawyer, Richard and a business man, Jeremy.

Richard Babbé was a pilot with British Airways (including a spell on Concorde) prior to returning to Guernsey and taking up the law.  Although a Guernsey firm continues to bear his name he is now retired but maintains a portfolio of non-executive positions in the finance industry.

Jeremy Thompson is a consultant within the private equity sector. He was responsible for the acquisition of Guernsey Telecoms and was the first CEO of the newly privatised entity.  He has also worked in the aerospace and defence and oil & gas sectors.”

The prospect of electricity being generated in Guernsey territorial waters is an exciting possibility as this could provide the islands with a secure source of renewable energy.  Although there is great potential, the technology for tidal energy is not yet ready to harness this resource economically.  GREC is progressing well with setting up a licensing regime to ensure that when the technology is ready the island gets the best possible financial deal whilst ensuring our environment is not damaged.

President of the Chamber of Commerce, Julian Winser said “GREC are well down the road in examining the legislative framework, social and environmental issues and with ensuring that Guernsey will be commercially attractive to potential developers when the time comes to take this project to the next level”

The lunch will be held in the Regency Room of the OGH Hotel, oteH12.15 for 12.30pm on Monday 21 June 2010.  Bookings for individual places or tables can be made with the Chamber Office by emailing carrie.birch@guernseychamber.com and attaching the completed booking form.
