Recycling tour

Last week we were welcomed by Guernsey Recycling, Waste Oil Recycling and Mayside Recycling for a tour of their depots.

Around 25 people battled the cold weather and attended the tour and Q&A session afterwards with Guernsey Recycling and Mayside Recycling chairman Alan Crowe, Waste Oil Recycling managing director Peter Macgill and Guernsey Recycling group director Michael Grime.

Attendees were shown the Guernsey Recycling depot at Bulwer Avenue where they recycle metal scraps from washing machines, motor vehicles, boilers, and metal pipes and then export it to steel mills in Europe. Alan demonstrated the Vehicle Depollution Plant where oil, petrol and hydraulic fluids are emptied out of a vehicle which was then crushed and fragmentised to be shipped away.

The tour then moved on to the Waste Oil Recycling depot where waste oil from hotels, restaurants and households is recycling into bio-diesel. Peter Macgill explained that bio-diesel is cheaper and better for the environment.

The final stage of the tour was at Mayside Recycling where attendees could see for themselves what happens to their household recycling. A conveyer belt with magnets to separate out the tins from the plastics was demonstrated. Michael and Alan were on hand to answer questions which included a variety of topics including why bags and black plastic are not currently recyclable, what plans are being made for food waste and is the kerbside collection scheme working effectively.

Some of the attendees then went on to enjoy a social meal afterwards.

Chamber would like to thank Alan, Peter and Michael for organising a thoroughly insightful and interesting tour. We have had many people ask if we will be holding it again as they couldn’t make this event, and we will definitely be holding another tour but in the warmer climates of the summer months and lighter evenings.
