Intellectual property has a strategic role in Guernsey’s economic future

Last week at the April Chamber Lunch John Ogier, Guernsey’s former Registrar of Intellectual Property, spoke about intellectual capital and innovation in the Guernsey economy.

John’s talk included some interesting statistics including the balance between intangible and tangible assets being now 80% intangible to 20% tangible. He commented that it’s about finding a balance between the interest of the innovator and fostering creativity and to stimulate innovation and enable wealth.

John touched on geographical indicators mentioning that Guernsey cows and milk would come under this. He is also commented that few Guernsey finance firms have register their brand as a trademark and encouraged them to do so. Attendees were surprised to hear that in the World Bank’s Top 100 places to do business in the world, Guernsey didn’t feature but Singapore topped the list.

The seminar finished on a comment by John that the future is all about finance, digital and intellectual property.

We thank John Ogier for providing this interesting talk to our guests.

Thank you also to our venue The Old Government House Hotel and Spa and sponsor Sure.
