The Inside Press

Last week we were welcomed by the Guernsey Press to see for ourselves what goes into a daily print run of our only daily newspaper.

Around 20 people attended the tour of the Press HQ and print works, with Marketing Manager Jeremy Marquand, followed by a Q&A session afterwards with Guernsey Press Business Editor James Falla and Business Writer Rosie Allsopp.

Attendees had the opportunity of an inside look at the process of putting together a daily edition of the newspaper from sourcing a story to the printing of the paper.

At the start of the tour visitors were shown an example of a page before it was printed. These ‘plates’ are the modern equivalent of the old hot metal machines of days gone by where individual letters were loaded by hand. Today the process is much slicker, and cleaner, with the master plates printed out as complete pages ready to be handed over to the printers. Next was a visit to the ‘web room’ where the paper is actually printed. Members got to experience the noise and surprising scale of the operation.

From the blank paper loaded on the print press, tensioned, and then feed to several different printers in the same line we got to see the various individual machines working as one. At the end of the print line the printed pages were merged together into one final paper. It was a sight which raised several questions in how it was done – Marketing Manager Jeremy Marquand summed up the process as ‘magic’.

The final stage of the tour was arguably the most lively. Attendees were able to put any editorial based questions directly to James and Rosie with Jeremy on hand to answer any marketing based subjects. Although many challenging issues were raised Hayley Webb summed up the day by adding that she felt the for a local newspaper the Press does a really good job.

Chamber would like to thank Jeremy, James and Rosie for organising a thoroughly insightful and interesting tour. Definitely one not to miss if we are lucky enough to be offered a return visit.
