Business Trends’ Survey Seminar

Last week we held our Business Trends’ Survey Seminar which was very well attended and created an interesting debate within the room and online.

Our panelists Jon Moulton, Gavin St Pier and Kevin Stewart were moderated by Mark Thompson of KPMG.

Mark Thompson kicked off the debate by questioning whether maybe the timing of the survey during the UK Elections affected the economic confidence of responders. Having asked attendees if they felt more confident about the economy now after the election, the majority agreed.

Jon Moulton, Better Capital, stated that where the responsibility of the States begins and where it ends needs to be decided. On the subject of airlinks, Kevin Stewart, Commerce and Employment, commented that Jersey has better air links but a larger population and confirmed that they have met all airlines and have to review strategically important routes. Jon Moulton added that things are slightly cheaper than four years ago and that the City route is obvious one at moment and should be considered.

Gavin St Pier, Treasury and Resources, agreed that transformation needs to be accepted across government. Kevin went on to say that Guernsey needs to address skills gaps including the younger community but also the older community. He also touched on how developing proper policy and finance sector strategy has helped gain funds to introduce Guernsey’s Digital Greenhouse.

On the subject of finance, Gavin stated that availability of credit for business on island is a big issue that government need to review.

We would like to thank all our panelists and moderator and Matt Stanbury of BWCI who gave attendees an overview of the results at the start of the seminar.

Thank you also to our venue i2 Office and sponsor BWCI Group.
