2016 Business Trends’ Survey results are in

The annual Guernsey Business Trends’ Survey is complete and we can now share with you what local businesses had to say.

This survey, undertaken independently by Island Global Research, enables the Young Business Group (YBG) in conjunction with Guernsey Chamber of Commerce and BWCI, to present the views of Guernsey’s business community and to establish the business performance and confidence levels within the private sector.

A total of 69 businesses responded representing a wide spectrum of sectors that make up Guernsey’s business community including hospitality and tourism, construction, retail, finance and transport.

With 46% of businesses reporting their profitability in 2015 to be either substantially or slightly up on 2014 and over 59% of businesses reporting their turnover in 2015 to be either substantially or slightly up on 2014.

When questioned on the levels of confidence in the island’s economy over the next 12 months, 12% reported feeling much more or more confident than this time last year and 46% feeling less confident or much less confident.

Results indicated that the three potential island innovation proposals that the business sector most strongly supported are:

  • Government support for emerging/growth economic sectors providing greater economic diversification
  • Government collaboration/partnership between public sector bodies in Jersey and Guernsey
  • Better forums for Government and business leaders to exchange views on government policy

Following on from the release of the results, we are holding a lunchtime seminar on 7 June where you will have the opportunity to question a panel of speakers on the trends and how the island might address the key issues its business sector is facing.

The panel will comprise:

  • Gavin St Pier, President of States of Guernsey Policy and Resources Committee
  • Chris Brock, Managing Director of Island Global Research
  • Jan Kuttelwascher, Vice President of States of Guernsey Economic Development Committee
  • Barry Brehaut, President of States of Guernsey Environment and Infrastructure Committee

The panel moderator will be Linda Johnson, Advisory Director at KPMG and Chairman of IOD Guernsey.
